People who are exposed to chicken pox or measles have to consult a doctor immediately as these conditions can have fatal interactions with Flonase. It can also temporarily lower blood cells that help fight body infections. This spray should not be given to a child younger than 4 years without the advice of a doctor. Since steroid medications can hinder growth, a doctor should be consulted if the child is not growing normally while on generic Flonase.

Allergies to any drugs should be brought to the doctor’s notice. Other conditions that the doctor should know about are glaucoma, liver disease, herpes simplex virus, tuberculosis and sores and ulcers in the nose. The effects of this drug on an unborn baby have yet to be determined. However it is better to inform the doctor if the patient is pregnant or has any plans to do so while under this medicine. The doctor should also be informed of the use of any medicines including vitamins, minerals and herbal products. Patients who have had recent nasal surgery, nasal septal ulcers or nasal trauma should not use this spray as it can inhibit wound healing.

The recommended dose of this drug is 1 or 2 spays in each nostril daily. The dosage period and amount should not exceed beyond what the doctor prescribed. The spray pump has to be primed before initial use. This can be done by shaking the medicine and spraying 6 test sprays in to the air. Keep spraying until a fine mist appears. Priming should be done each time the medicine has been unused for 30 days or if the cap has been left off for more than 5 days. The progress of the spray has to be checked by a doctor on a regular basis. Hence appointments should not be missed.

If a dose is missed, the medication should be used as soon as possible. Extra medicine should not be used to make up for the missed dosage. Overdose of generic Flonase is not linked to life threatening conditions. But it is better to seek medical help. Long term overdose is related to easy bruising, thinning skin, menstrual problems, impotence and increased acne or facial hair. While using this spray, the eyes should be protected. If it gets into the eyes, immediately rinse with water and seek medical help.

The active component in the spray is Fluticasone propionate. It is a white powder that is insoluble in water. Other components in the spray are microcrystalline cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose sodium, dextrose, benzalkonium chloride, polysorbate and phenylethyl alcohol. The spray is administered into the nasal mucosa using a metering, atomizing spray pump. Each bottle contains about 120 metered sprays.

Like other corticosteroids, the generic for Flonase does not have any immediate effects on the symptoms of allergy. However prolonged use of it can obtain maximum benefits and the symptoms do not return for several days even after the spray is discontinued. As many as 13 clinical studies were performed to determine the effects of Flonase on nasal obstruction, sneezing, nasal itching and rhinorrhea. A total of 2633 adults, 440 adolescents and 500 children were involved in these studies. It was observed that patients treated with Flonase showed significant improvements than those given a placebo.

The maximum daily dosage should not exceed 2 sprays in each nostril. Exceeding the recommended dose has not yet been proven effective. Exceeding the dosage has been found to lead to hypercorticism and adrenal suppression. In such cases, the dosage should be gradually discontinued. The nasal spray should be cleaned at least once a week. The medicine should not be shared with anyone else. It should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
